THE KEY ELEMENTS OF A MINIMALIST STYLE KITCHEN

The term ‘minimalist’ generally refers to a notion of simple living, centred around a pared-back lifestyle with little want or need for material things. For you this may translate to having less ‘stuff’ and clutter around the home, or maybe giving your wardrobe and bathroom drawers a big clean out.

However when we think of a minimalistic kitchen, we think more to the design and overall aesthetic of the style. We think of clean lines, neutral colours, beautiful symmetry and a harmonious style with every element working together to create an understated masterpiece, one that doesn’t overwhelm your home, but somehow lifts it up at the same time.

So how do you go about achieving a minimalistic kitchen design? Let’s unpack some of the key elements of this style, and how they can be most effective in your space.

Keep it Clean

Clean lines define a minimalist kitchen incredibly well, as they provide the symmetry and balance that are integral to the overall feel of the space and portray a simple unified style that demonstrates a clean look without too much detail. In a minimalist kitchen you will usually find cabinetry which is symmetrical, with minimal gaps and expertly designed to provide clutter-free organisation.

Minimise Accessories

Door handles, drawer handles (and external accessories in general) are fairly absent from the minimalist style kitchen, as an uninterrupted surface is a hallmark trait of the design.

Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to open a door or drawer when handles don’t fit the style brief for your space, and we have a few other options up our sleeve to ensure you still have access to all your essentials without interrupting the flow of your cabinetry.

Horizontal or vertical finger rails are a great option, and with the hidden rail designed to match your cabinetry, you will be hard pressed to even notice they are there! Push to open drawers and doors are another popular option, and why not upgrade your push to open cabinets to be electronically powered for that extra little touch of luxury!

Classic Colours

White is a prominent choice in minimalist kitchens, based on the colour’s innate ability to create a clean look that can then easily flow into other areas of rooms surrounding the kitchen. In saying that, a minimalist style kitchen does not need to completely avoid colour, as natural woods and earthy textures are also often layered together to create balance, interest and depth in a lighter room. The furniture that’s used in a kitchen also plays a critical role in its overall style. A minimalist kitchen can also make unique accessories stand out, you could style black wire kitchen stools with matte black pendant lighting for a modern, unified look.

Think toward the future

Minimalist kitchens quite often seem futuristic and sophisticated with their modern and often ‘hidden’ features. Key design concepts can include integration of appliances such as your fridge and dishwasher into the cabinetry so that continuous colour is not interrupted, preserving and enhancing those beautiful clean lines we talked about above. Another effective option for minimalist twist to your space, is to utilize a contrasting appliance colour – think a cool white kitchen paired with a luxe black built-in oven to create a slick contrast that feels on trend and super stylish, without distracting from the overall paired-back vibe of your room.
