CLIENT STORIES: Mark & tamara

After nearly two decades of living in their family home, Mark and Tamara decided it was time for a change. Their kitchen had served them well for 17 years but was starting to show its age.

With five people in the household, the space no longer met their growing family’s needs. So, they turned to The Maker Designer Kitchens to create a contemporary, functional kitchen that would support their lifestyle for years to come.

“We’ve been here nearly 20 years. We intend being here for another 20 years, so it was time to invest some love in it,” said Tamara

A vision for the future: crafting a brief that delivers

For Mark and Tamara, their kitchen was more than just a place to cook – it was the heart of their home, where they entertained guests and gathered as a family. As an avid cook and entertainer, Tamara had a clear vision of what she needed: more benchtop space for preparation, increased storage for appliances, and a seamless flow between the kitchen and living area.

“I like cooking much more now and have become invested in spending time in the kitchen. So I wanted more of a chef’s kitchen,” Tamara explained.

The couple collaborated with our kitchen designer to turn their ideas into reality. The brief centered on creating a modern, inviting space for socialising, complete with integrated appliances and smart storage solutions.

Tamara’s love for colour and texture guided the design towards a warm, earthy palette moving away from the sleek, monochrome trends for a more natural look inspired by the outdoors.

“I love colour and textures, so when we were discussing with the kitchen designer, I made it clear that I didn’t want a white or black kitchen. I wanted colour, texture, and a variety of materials. My brief was for a warm, earthy palette with colours inspired by nature,” she shared.

With this vision in mind, the kitchen also needed to address practical challenges, such as incorporating a structural column that couldn’t be removed, while maximising natural light to create an open and welcoming environment.

The impact: a kitchen that truly feels like home

The collaboration with The Maker Designer Kitchens was key to refining Tamara and Mark’s vision. Their kitchen designer’s expertise helped the couple make the most of their space, focusing on smart storage solutions over mere size.

“I remember when our kitchen designer completed the design, the pantry seemed much smaller. I told her I needed a bigger pantry, but she assured me, saying, ‘Trust me, it’s about smart storage rather than just the size of the space,’” Tamara recalled.

The seamless renovation process, led by the project management and construction team, ensured that every detail was meticulously executed—from grain matching in the cabinetry to sourcing special handles for integrated appliances.

The transformation of their kitchen has had a profound impact on the family’s day-to-day life. With modern amenities, ample storage, and a space designed for entertaining, Tamara and Mark’s kitchen has become the true heart of their home.

“We enjoy cooking and entertaining more now. Everyone loves getting involved, making platters, and having friends over. When we have guests, we all congregate in the kitchen. It’s lovely, and it truly feels like the heart of our home.”
